Obituary of Verna E. Bankert

Verna E. Bankert, 84, passed away on January 12, 2024, at Boulder Post Acute Skilled Nursing Home. She was born April 21, 1939 in Garlin, KY, the daughter of Albert H. Engle and Margie S. (Kipe) Engle. Verna graduated from Messiah College Academy Class of 1957. She then completed one year of post graduate studies at Messiah College before taking leave to marry Nathan E. Bankert also attending Messiah College for Pastoral Ministries. They celebrated 65 years in June 2023. Verna returned to Messiah College completing her teachers degree in elementary education in 1974 and taught in the Harrisburg City Schools until retiring. She then moved to Boulder, Colorado and became a rural route mail carrier in Boulder County until retiring with Nathan to their cabin in the Quartz Creek mountains of Pitkin, CO. Verna loved to read. She passed her talent in reading to children as well as her love of teaching along to 3 generations. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening as favorite past times, the deep purple iris being her favorite. Verna had a fundamental Christian upbringing and taught this faith to her daughters; it is a treasure in her legacy. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Joe Engle. Surviving in addition to her husband Nathan Bankert are daughters Vicky Shaulis, Colleen Moore and Adele Bankert, 5 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren. There will not be a funeral-memorial service at this time. Instead, we invite all those who wish to participate to plant a flower in her memory on the 85th anniversary of her birth, April 21, 2024.
