Obituary of Steve Woods

Tribute Remembering Steven Woods, 59 Dek: Steve was a mountain of a man in the climbing community. He remained an avid outdoorsman and climber throughout his life. Steven Douglas Woods, 59, passed away on December 10, 2022, following complications due to a heart attack. He was surrounded by family at UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont, Colorado. Steve was born on October 14, 1963, on Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base in Missouri to Lieutenant Colonel Jack V. Woods (USAF-retired) and Eva Kay Woods. Growing up in an Air Force family, Steve loved traveling around the United States and fondly remembered his six years in Japan. Steve graduated from Tennessee's Tullahoma High School in 1981. In 1985, he received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from the Herff College of Engineering at Memphis State University in Tennessee. Following graduation, he relocated to Plano, Texas after accepting a position as a data security manager with Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Steve worked at EDS for 23 years, eventually becoming the senior systems engineer. He went on to work as an IT consultant for 10 years before accepting a position as a programmer analyst with District Technology Services, St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado. Steve met Carol Martin while on vacation in South Padre Island, Texas, and they were married shortly thereafter on September 4, 1988. During their 34 years of marriage, Steve and Carol raised two children: Daniel and Amanda Woods. While living in Texas, Steve and Daniel took up rock climbing at Mineral Wells State Park, and the experience would forever change their lives. The Woods family moved to Longmont, Colorado in 1997 following a climbing trip Steve took with his brother Dan Woods in Rocky Mountain National Park. Steve was a mountain of a man in the climbing community. He remained an avid outdoorsman and climber throughout his life. His proudest ascent was City Slicker (5.12a), at the Primo Wall in Clear Creek Canyon. His greatest passion was always his family—he loved traveling around the world to support Daniel and Amanda in their climbing adventures. His many travel destinations included Guatemala, Mexico; Bulgaria, Greece; Austria, Italy; Spain; and Scotland, among others. “He belayed me on my first 8b+ (14a) and spotted me on my first 8B+ (V14),” wrote Daniel on Instagram. “He was my number one climbing partner in my early to teen years.” With his father’s mentorship, Daniel went on to become one of the world’s foremost professional climbers. Steve was also described as a life guide, mentor, philosopher, and friend. He was passionate about working for the greater good and demonstrated love and kindness to all. He is survived by his wife, Carol Woods; two children, Daniel Woods and Amanda (Michelle) Escheman; father, Jack Woods; three brothers, Dan (Robyn) Woods, Tim (Mary) Woods, and Mike (Wendy) Woods.
