Obituary of Joan Leone Thompson

Tribute On Thursday, January 19, 2023 Joan Leone Thompson surrounded by loving family passed away at the age of 78. She was born on September 26, 1944 at Denver General Hospital, in Denver Colorado to Chris and Mary Jensen. Joan grew up at Highland Lake near Mead Colorado and attended Mead schools. Joan met Charles (Bill) Thompson Jr. at Highland Lake in the spring of 1967. They married on October 25, 1968 and celebrated 54 plus years of marriage! Joan held many different jobs throughout her life. She grew up helping to run the family concession/boating business at Highland Lake. Early on she worked at Harpers Potato Chip factory in Longmont. She then worked in the kitchen at the local nursing home near Longmont United Hospital. When she moved to Tucson, Arizona she was a retail clerk at Sprouse Reitz department store until it closed. She ended her working career at Tucson Unified School District as a kitchen manager. Joan was known for her dedication to family and friends, shopping, persistence, warm smile, love of sports and discussing her views of current events. Through her husband Bill’s career at IBM they met many lifelong friends and enjoyed participating in many different sports offered at the IBM club, including softball, basketball and volleyball. She bowled in many different leagues throughout her lifetime. Ice skating at Highland Lake was also a favorite family activity that she enjoyed with her daughters, son, mother and siblings. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her, though her spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched as a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and friend. Joan is survived by her husband Charles (Bill) Thompson Jr., her daughter Rosemary and husband Mike Albrecht, her son William (Billy) and wife Viola. Grandchildren Amanda, Shawntel, Brandon, Brittany, Nic, Rollie, Bradley, Brian and six great grandchildren, a brother Lawrence Jensen and wife Milicent, sisters Judy Sargent and Linda Spurlock, many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. She is preceded in death by her daughter Christine, her parents Chris and Mary Jensen and her siblings Anita Schwartz and Roland Jensen. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday February 6, 2023 at Mead United Methodist Church, 501 Palmer Avenue, Mead, Colorado. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will take place in the Highlandlake Pioneer Cemetery at a later date.
