Obituary of Wayne Eugene Burt

Wayne Eugene Burt

August 8, 1927 – August 18, 2023

Wayne Eugene Burt of Broomfield Colorado died on Friday, August 18, 2023, following a few short years of declining health. He was born, the second of three sons, in Haxtun Colorado to Victor Burt and Clara (Horn) Burt on Monday, August 8, 1927.

He attended Longmont High School, graduating on June 19, 1947. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Navy serving during World War II from July 17, 1945, to July 13, 1946, as a machinist's mate 3rd class on the USS Casablanca.

He married Barbara Faye Bramlette in Chicago in April of 1950. They had three children: David, Stephen, and Donna. They were married until Barbara’s passing in October 1976. He worked as an electrical technician at Martin-Marietta and also at Ball Brothers Research Corporation in Boulder until his retirement.

One memorable moment of his time on the USS Casablanca was the day he was on the deck of the ship with many other sailors and he looked out across the ocean. He thought the horizon didn’t quite look right. Suddenly he realized a massive tidal wave was heading straight for the ship and he helped send up the alarm. All the sailors, except one, could get below deck before the tsunami hit. He regretted the loss of that one sailor, but in truth, he also saved the lives of many others.

While working at Ball Brothers Research Corporation he helped design and build various telecommunication satellites and also worked on the massive mirror for the Hubble Space Telescope.

Following retirement, he kept active playing softball, and volleyball, volunteering at the Broomfield Senior Center in the wood shop and at the Broomfield Veteran’s Museum. He was also proud of volunteering in the American Legion Color Guard through the years.

Wayne was a fifty-year member of the Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Broomfield, serving in many capacities for several decades.

His faith was an integral part of his life. Wayne wrote these words a few years ago anticipating this day: “To my lovely little family, I express my love for each of you – Dave, Stephen and Donna and your children… It is a mystery at my age, that my little family has happened and that they are revered by me… I won’t attend my burial, only my old worn-out body will be there. But my soul and spirit will be called into a glorious new life with my Lord and Savior.”

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara, his two brothers Dale and Tracy, daughter-in-law Donna Marie and granddaughter Jennifer, and by his good friend Lexie Steele.

He is survived by his son David and his wife Rebecca, son Stephen and his wife Donnette, and daughter Donna Rohde and her husband Jeff, five grandsons – Jared, Justin, Jason, Eric, and Thomas, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
