When I think of Don, I immediately crack a smile. I met Don through my wife Patti (Neville) Van Pelt in 1983, and we hit it off immediately. I think because we both liked to tease, we both liked to laugh, and we also liked an “occasional” barley pop! I could fill this page with all the fun times I had with Don but I want to share why I really liked him. And that was because he had a heart of gold. You see my brother passed away in 1986 and I was really struggling with his death. Good ole Don was always there for me. He listened to my stories, he let me cry on his shoulder and I always went home feeling better than I did when I arrived. Don filled a void for me that I will never forget! He helped me get to the other side of that tragedy. And I’m so thankful for his friendship! Don was a good man, one I’feel lucky to have known, and I loved him. Rest in peace my friend! Mark Van Pelt

I’ve known Don for 54 years. He was first my brother-in-law but quickly became my brother and he was my brother throughout the entire 54 years that I’ve known him. He was family, and was family to my husband Mark and our kids, Zeb & Katie. He will always and forever be in our hearts and we will miss him!
Memories of Don….
* The Yellow Panel wagon - Don would always take us to baseball &/or slow pitch ballgames when we were little. He’d take us in his yellow panel wagon, which I swear the seats were never fastened to the floor, so when he would drive fast (as he always did) and drive like a maniac, swerving back and forth, we would fall backwards and roll to the back! I can imagine with the sense of humor he had, that he loved hearing us laugh and sometimes squeal when he was behind the wheel! And I’d always hear Cheryl yelling “Don!” But she’d be laughing hysterically at the same time!
* Card games - Don loved playing cards. He is the only guy I’ve ever known that would bid “8” every hand, without even looking at his hand!! 9 out of 10 times he’d win!!
* Movies - I remember the time we all went to a scary movie. (Mom, Dad and all of us siblings) Don had purchased a bag of m&ms to enjoy while watching the movie. During the scene where big foot slammed his hand through the bathroom window, Don was getting ready to pass the m&ms down the row but nobody got any because Don threw the bag in the air and I’m pretty sure it landed maybe a couple rows either in front or behind us hahaha
* a Heart of Gold - that was Don’s heart! He would do anything for anyone without thinking twice about it.
I know I will think and dream of more fond memories, but these are what I remember today. We love him, we love his family, and we are thinking of you and praying God gives you his strength, patience, guidance and comfort during your times in need.
